Can people see if you view their Instagram story?

Yes. When you watch a story in the Instagram app while you are signed in, the account that posted it can see that you watched. Your name goes on the story's viewer list.

Instagram's Help Center explains it the same way: when you see someone's story, that person can tell you have seen it, and the list of people who viewed a story stays available for 48 hours after it goes up. You can read it on Instagram's help page about story viewers.

There is one way to watch without joining that list: never open the story from your own account. For public accounts, the anonymous story viewer does that for you.

Key takeaways

  • Watching a story in the Instagram app while signed in puts your name on its viewer list.
  • The account can check that list for 48 hours after the story goes up. After that, the names are no longer shown.
  • Likes, replies and reactions come from your account, so the owner sees who sent them.
  • Instagram sends no alert when you take a screenshot of a story or download it.
  • Opening a story just to copy its link counts as a view.
  • The anonymous story viewer loads stories through this site, not through your account, so no name is added. It works with public accounts only.

Why your name ends up on the list

The viewer list is made of the accounts that opened the story. In the Instagram app you are signed in, so tapping a story opens it as you, and your account joins the list. The story itself disappears after 24 hours, but the list stays with its owner until 48 hours after posting.

Three things catch people out:

  • Copying a link. To copy a story's link, you have to open the story first, and that is a view. If you would rather not be listed, type the username into the viewer instead of copying a link.
  • Highlights. Putting a story in a highlight does not hide its viewers. While the story is less than 48 hours old, your name can show even when you open it from the highlight.
  • Likes, replies and reactions. These always come from your account. A reply or a reaction lands in the owner's messages, and a like shows next to your name.

What the account never sees

  • That you took a screenshot. Instagram sends no alert when you screenshot a story. Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story? covers the exceptions in messages.
  • That you downloaded the story. Nobody is notified when a story is saved.
  • Who watched after 48 hours. Instagram shows who viewed a story for 48 hours after it was posted. A highlight does not extend that.
  • That you visited the profile. Instagram does not tell people who looked at their profile.
  • Anything you watch through the storydownload viewer. The stories load on this site, not in your Instagram app, so there is nothing on the owner's side to show you were there.

How to watch a public story without appearing on the list

The anonymous story viewer fetches the stories on this site instead of opening them from your account. Your name is never added to the viewer list.

  1. Type a username. Enter the public account's username, with or without the @. A link to the profile works too.
  2. Press View. The stories the account has up right now appear as a grid of photos and videos.
  3. Watch or save. Tap a story to play it on the page, then tap left or right to move between stories. Every story has a download button, in the grid and in the player.

There is no Instagram login and nothing to pay. Saved stories keep the resolution Instagram serves: MP4 for videos, JPG for photos. The story downloader on the home page works the same way when you type a username: the stories are fetched here and never opened from your Instagram account.

Two limits are worth knowing:

  • Public accounts only. Stories from a private account are for the followers its owner approved, and they stay that way. The viewer does not get around that.
  • It cannot undo a view. If you already opened the story in the app, your name is on the list. Watching it again in the viewer does not take it off.

If no stories appear, the account is private or has none up right now. The viewer cannot tell which, so check the username or try again later. Why can't I see someone's Instagram story? goes through the other reasons.

FAQ

Can people see if you view their Instagram story?

Yes, if you watch it in the Instagram app while signed in. Your name goes on the viewer list, and the owner can check it for 48 hours after posting. If you watch through the anonymous story viewer, no name is added, because your account is never used.

How long can someone see who viewed their story?

For 48 hours after the story was posted. The story disappears after 24 hours, but the list stays for another day. After 48 hours, the names are no longer shown, even if the story was added to a highlight.

How can I watch an Instagram story without them knowing?

Do not open it from your Instagram account. If the account is public, type its username into the anonymous story viewer and watch there. Your account is never involved, so your name is not added to the list.

Can someone see if I screenshot their Instagram story?

No. Instagram sends no alert when you take a screenshot of a story. Your view is a different matter: if you watched the story in the app, your name is already on the viewer list.

Can someone see if I download their Instagram story?

No. Instagram does not notify anyone when a story is downloaded. When you download through storydownload, the story is fetched on this site and never opened from your account, so you are not added to the viewer list either.

Do highlights show who viewed them?

Only for a while. A story in a highlight still shows its viewers until it is 48 hours old. After that, the names are no longer shown, so the owner cannot see that you watched an older highlight. Do Instagram highlights expire? explains who can see a highlight and for how long.

Can I view a private story?

No. The viewer works only with public accounts. Stories from a private account are for the followers its owner approved, and they stay that way.

Can someone see that I looked at their profile?

No. Instagram does not tell people who looked at their profile. Story views are different: those do show your name.

Do I need an Instagram account to use the viewer?

No. There is nothing to sign in to and nothing to pay. Type a username, press View, and the stories load.

Why does the viewer show no stories?

The account posted no story in the last 24 hours, or it is private. The viewer cannot tell which. Check the username, or try again later.
